Foundations: An Introduction to Bridge-Building for White People (values-based)

It is unfair to expect the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) we are in a relationship with to bear the responsibility of educating us. Instead, we should take the initiative to learn through reading, research, and self-reflection and to learn from BIPOC-led organizations that have a unique understanding of how to build bridges.

Our Foundations course was created for our white community by our white educators. Designed as the first step in our transformational pathway, this course encourages you to do the preliminary and necessary work of self-reflection.Your instructors will facilitate conversations on how to build bridges sustainably, barriers to healthy bridge-building, and introduce the white supremacy historical timeline.

No matter where you are on the journey of learning about racial justice, this course is informative and beneficial for those of us who desire to become active bridge-builders.

This course is self-paced and   values-based, designed to engage participants in learning through shared principles of integrity, empathy, and justice.

When it comes to racial bridge-building for white people, Be the Bridge places a lot of focus on listening to and learning from Black, Indigenous, Asian and Latinx communities.

While listening and engaging with people of color is important, there is a lot of work to be done to “catch up” on our racial understanding. We cannot place the burden on BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) by expecting them to teach a basic level of information we can learn through our own reading, research, and self-reflection.

This course, Foundations: An Introduction to Bridge-Building for White People, gives you a way to do that preliminary and necessary work. It is created for the white community by our white educators. Foundations should be used as a “first step” before finding and/or deepening cross-racial engagement, such as through the Be the Bridge’s Building Bridges guide intended for cross-racial groups.
