offers an engaging journey through the complex history of how race and religion have shaped U.S. identity. Starting with the nation's early days, we'll explore the Second Great Awakening, the rise of evangelicalism and fundamentalism, and their transformation into Christian Nationalism. We'll then delve into the U.S.'s rich tapestry of religious and cultural diversity, examining how Christian Nationalism has responded to pivotal moments like the Civil Rights Movement and post-1965 immigration. Finally, we'll tackle the pressing issues of today, from education and LGBTQ+ rights to reproductive rights and international policies, uncovering the profound influence of Christian Nationalism on contemporary American politics.
Meet the instructor

Dr. Tiffany Puett

Dr. Puett (she/they) is a scholar of American religions and a community educator who has been writing, researching, and teaching for over 20 years. In 2015, she founded the Institute for Diversity and Civic Life to research, document, and foster conversations about the rich diversity of Texas. She also teaches in the Department of Religious Studies at St. Edward’s University. She holds a PhD in Religious Studies from the University of Waterloo and a master’s degree in Ethics from Boston University. Her work is inspired by the rich diversity of Texas, the power of storytelling, and her commitment to mutual liberation. She lives in Austin with her spouse, two lovely children, and two energetic dogs.
